Latest poll confirms Ukraine parliamentary election trends

23 May 2018

The latest poll on the 2019 parliamentary elections in Ukraine released on May 22, which was conducted by the Rating Sociological Group, reflected the trends revealed by other polls in recent months. Namely, the Fatherland party led by former PM and political prisoner Yulia Tymoshenko commands the lead, the president’s Solidarity party is struggling and the Russian-oriented parties enjoy significant support. Of those planning to vote, 13% of votes are for populist Fatherland, 7% for the reform-oriented Civic Position, 7% for Solidarity, 7% for the Russian-oriented Opposition Bloc, 7% for the populist Radical Party, 6% for the Russian-oriented For Life party, and 6% for the reform-oriented Self-Reliance party. Pro-EU parties have 40% of the vote, compared to 13% for the Russian-oriented.

The poll was conducted between March 15 and 31 involving 2,400 respondents.  Although the survey involved several dozen other questions, the International Republican Institute that financed it didn’t request a poll for the presidential election scheduled for March 2019, a Rating representative informed Concorde Capital. The parliamentary vote is scheduled for October 2019.

Zenon Zawada: Although the polls have stabilized recently, we expect sharp changes in the months leading up to the presidential elections. Many dramatic events and revelations will occur, likely involving personal smears and corruption scandals, and likely involving Russia and its proxies in Ukraine. As we have said, the Ukrainian elections are wide open and any one candidate or party can suddenly take the lead.
