Oleksiy Danilov, who served as head of the Luhansk
regional administration in 2005, was appointed on Oct. 3 as secretary of the
National Security and Defense Council by the president. A native of the town of
Krasniy Luch, which is situated in Russian-occupied Luhansk, Danilov served as
mayor of Luhansk between 1994 and 1997. His biography between 2007 and 2019
wasn’t available on the Internet and major news sites. He was appointed as
deputy secretary of the National Security and Defense Council in July 2019.
Danilov replaces Oleksandr Danylyuk, the former
finance minister – who handled the Privatbank nationalization – and was
appointed as the council secretary in May. In an interview with the BBC news
agency published on Oct. 3, Danylyuk said he submitted his resignation owing to
several factors, the last straw being the arson fire of the suburban Kyiv home
of Valeria Gontareva, the former governor of the National Bank. “Events
occurred in recent weeks that caused a wide uproar. That applies to the
searches at Privatbank, and the arson of Gontareva’s car and residence. That
is, there was a concentration of events that sent a very negative signal. As a
person who risked my reputation during the election campaign when I said that I
will do everything in order for (Ihor) Kolomoisky’s influence to be restricted,
of course I couldn’t not react to that,” Danylyuk said.
