Chinese company Dongfang Electric International
Corporation is the winner of a tender to construct a 660 MW power unit for
power generator Donbasenergo (DOEN UK), the nashigroshi.org news site reported
on Dec. 25. The winner’s bid was UAH 19.09 bln (about USD 680 mln) as its total
cost of constructing the power unit. The new unit, to be built at the location
of the demolished Unit #6 of the Slovianska Power Plant, will consist of two
parts producing 330 MW each, equipped with boilers that will burn coal under
CFB technology. The first part of the power unit will be commissioned in July
2022, the second one in July 2023. The tender winner has committed to
attracting financing for at least 85% of the project’s costs for at least 15
years.
Alexander Paraschiy: Donbasenergo
is currently the smallest and the least efficient operator of thermal power
plants in Ukraine, controlling only one power plant (Slovianska) with a single
operational power unit. Its management had been considering constructing the
new CFB power unit for over a decade, and it’s positive news that this project
is becoming a reality. It will be the biggest in Ukraine’s coal-fired power
generation in the last three decades.
Donbasenergo already has experience in operating
CFB power units, as it is the first and the only GenCo in Ukraine that has
installed a power unit with a CFB boiler (at the Starobesheve Power Plant,
which is located on the territory of the Donetsk region occupied by Russia, and
which the company de jure does not control any more). The new power unit should
significantly improve the fuel efficiency of Donbasenergo, as well as improve
the reliability of its generation equipment. That will enable Donbasenergo to
more efficiently compete with bigger and more efficient coal-fired power
generators.
