Ukraine needs to create the High Anti-Corruption Court
by the presidential elections, said on Feb. 5 Hugh Mingarelli, the head of the
EU delegation to Ukraine, as reported by the liga.net news agency. Recall, the
president’s draft was criticized by the IMF and World Bank for failing to meet
Venice Commission requirements of the Council of Europe. Ukraine’s presidential
elections are scheduled for March 2019. At the same gathering, Mingarelli said
that it’s impossible for Ukraine to return to an autocratic regime because of
its active civil society.
Zenon Zawada: We believe President Poroshenko will lead the creation of the
anti-corruption court on this timeline because he has no other means of
obtaining the loans that it needs. However, we don’t share Mingarelli’s
certainty about Ukraine’s democratic future. Russia remains determined to bring
the Ukrainian territory back under its control and will go to extremes to
accomplish this goal.
