The EU will sign the Association Agreement with Ukraine’s newly elected president in 2015 if it fails with current Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych, tweeted on October 24 European Parliament MP Jacek Saryusz-Wolski.
Zenon Zawada: We consider it a poor option to postpone the signing of the Association Agreement, which is scheduled to occur at the Eastern Partnership summit in Vilnius on November 28-29. Firstly, there is a strong chance that Yanukovych will get re-elected and therefore, Tymoshenko will remain imprisoned. Secondly, the European Parliament will have new members and new agenda by 2015, with Ukraine on the back burner. Thirdly, the entire negotiations process would have to restart. Fourthly, the Ukrainian economy could collapse by 2015. Fifthly, the Yanukovych administration could get an offer it can’t refuse to join the Eurasian Union by then. The optimal solution for everyone involved is to sign the agreement next month.
