Jean-Claude Mignon, the president of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, met with leaders of the Ukrainian government and opposition on March 27 during a three-day visit to Kyiv that concludes today. He declined to give a press conference, only appearing on a news broadcast in which he expressed concern over the removal from parliament of Serhiy Vlasenko, the defense attorney of imprisoned former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko. A verdict from the European Court on Human Rights on Tymoshenko’s complaint of illegal imprisonment will be announced in the next few weeks, Mignon said. He declined to comment on the Ukrainian government’s progress in meeting Ukraine-EU Association Agreement requirements.
