President nominates Sorkin as NBU chair

Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych nominated on Jan. 9 Ihor Sorkin to serve as chair of the National Bank of Ukraine (NBU). He last served as deputy NBU chair, having climbed the ranks since his first NBU position in Donetsk in 1996. The previous NBU chair, Serhiy Arbuzov, was appointed by the president in December to serve as first deputy prime minister. The parliament majority is expected to approve Sorkin’s nomination today. Sorkin’s father, Viacheslav, is a high-ranking executive in Gazprom in the Russian Federation.
