Naftogaz seeks to purchase 27 bcm of gas from Gazprom in 2013

22 June 2012

Naftogaz (NAFTO) submitted a note to Gazprom saying it plans to purchase only 27 bcm of natural gas from the monopoly in 2013, according to Alexey Miller,Gazprom’s CEO.

Vitaliy Vavryshchuk: We estimate Ukraine may need 38-43 bcm of imported gas next year and the rest of the volume should be purchased either by private company Ostchem Holding from Gazprom (in line with its 2011 practice)or by Naftogaz from EU-based companies – e.g. Naftogaz is currently in talks with RWE on terms of such purchases. The announced volume is considerably below the 41.6 bcm that Naftogaz is bound to purchase from Gazprom under a take-or-pay scheme but the latter may accept the offer to avoid any litigation as to the terms of the notorious Ukraine-Russia gas contract from 2009.
