Ukrzaliznytsya signed a letter of intent with Kryukiv Wagon (KVBZ UK) to order a pilot batch of 90 passenger railcars for 10 intercity trains following testing, the railway operator announced yesterday via Interfax. Ukrzaliznytsya has already purchased the prototype; subsequent sales will depend on the availability of financing.
Roman Dmytrenko: Kryukiv Wagon spent USD 18.7 mln on R&D and production of the prototype intercity train, according to company officials. The sale of this prototype allowed Kryukiv to get back all the money it invested into the project. At the same time, the absence of a firm order from Ukrzaliznytsya and its eternal deficit of cash for new purchases puts the future of the project at risk.
