Court suspends Yanukovych victory; hearings slated for tomorrow

Yesterday Ukraine’s High Administrative Court decided to suspend the Central Election Commission’s February 14 declaration that Viktor Yanukovych won the presidency in the runoff on February 7, until it can decide on the case presented by runner up Yulia Tymoshenko. The High Administrative Court is due to begin hearings on the case tomorrow. Tymoshenko is alleging large scale abuses that would have given her the presidency. The High Administrative Court stopped short of forbidding Yanukovych from being sworn in, which was set for February 25 by parliament a day earlier. Brad Wells:  Tymoshenko’s appeals are widely regarded to have little chance of success, with the largest implication now looking to be a delayed inauguration, especially if the High Administrative Court rules against her and she files an appeal with the Constitutional Court of Ukraine.
