Yanukovich Vote Delayed Amid Confusion Over Cabinet Seats.

Yanukovich Vote Delayed Amid Confusion Over Cabinet Seats.

4 August 2008

The planned vote to confirm Regions party leader Viktor Yanukovich as prime minister has been delayed again and is now scheduled for this afternoon after 4 pm. Meanwhile various MPs are making sometimes conflicting statements about which ministries have been assigned to which parties. The Socialists have signed on to the agreement to create a “Coalition of National Unity”, signed yesterday by Regions and Our Ukraine, but Socialist MPs continue to say the Communists will remain in the majority coalition, which Our Ukraine rejects. Parliament is currently voting to appoint judges to the Constitutional Court, which has been without a quorum since last year. Tom Warner. We think these are minor quibbles and Yanukovich is still a shoe-in. Among the important cabinet posts that seem unchallenged are Andry Klyuyev (Regions) as energy minister, Serhy Tulub (Regions) as coal minister, Arseny Yatsenyuk (non-party) as economy minister, Borys Tarasyuk (Our Ukraine) as foreign minister, Anatoly Hrytsenko (Our Ukraine) as defense minister, Olexander Baranivsky (Socialists) as agriculture minister, and Petro Poroshenko (Our Ukraine) as first deputy prime minister.
