Yushchenko Threatens New Elections Ahead of Yanukovich Meeting.

1 August 2008

President Yushchenko made his strongest signal yet that he could dismiss parliament by issuing a statement through his press service that led off with details of his plans to fulfill the constitutional prerequisites for disbanding the legislature. The president’s hopes that an agreement could yet be signed with Regions party leader Viktor Yanukovich in a meeting planned for this afternoon were given short shrift in the statement’s final paragraph. The statement came shortly after Yanukovich said he would not sign the “Universal of National Unity” agreement unless the president and Our Ukraine accepted some edits approved by the Regions party at a meeting last night. Tom Warner: It is looking very unlikely that Yushchenko and Yanukovich will reach an agreement today. Most likely Yanukovich will slightly soften his position and talks will be prolonged yet again. However, there is a serious possibility that Yushchenko could disband parliament today.
