Compromise In The Works As Regions Fills Kyiv Streets.

Compromise In The Works As Regions Fills Kyiv Streets.

27 July 2008

President Yushchenko has invited all the major political leaders for a “round table” meeting at 4 pm, where some kind of compromise agreement is likely to be announced. However, one of Our Ukraine’s leaders, Petro Poroshenko, said after a morning meeting with Regions that there was no text ready for Our Ukraine to consider. More than 10,000 Regions party supporters were bused in to Kyiv overnight to add to the pressure on Yushchenko. Last night Yushchenko made clear he did not consider himself under any obligation to forward Viktor Yanukovich’s nomination as premier to parliament and said he didn’t want to dismiss parliament but he would if he was provoked. Tom Warner: Yanukovich andRegions are likely to sign on to a joint statement that suggests they support Yushchenko’s western-oriented policies. That would open the way for more serious talks on Our Ukraine joining the coalition, but there would still be much left to be negotiated. Yushchenko and Our Ukraine are likely to continue pressing Regions to drop the Communists from the coalition, and Regions is likely to continue resisting.
