Yesterday the National Electricity Regulation Commission approved a 25% increase in electricity tariffs for households from September 1. According to the commission, the increase would bring residential tariffs up to 65% of costs and reduce the subsidy burden on the power sector by $300m/year. Alexander Paraschiy: This is a good time to push through unpopular decisions, but it’s unclear if the acting government, which in the past has argued for slower tariff hikes, will approve this increase.
