Ukraine bans Belarusian aircraft from airspace as of May 29

28 May 2021

The Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine is forbidding
Belarusian registered aircraft from Ukrainian airspace starting at midnight May
29. The restrictions have no end date, according to Interfax-Ukraine. Following
the Cabinet’s move, Belarusian aircraft will only be able to fly
internationally via Russian airspace. The closure is part of the international
response to the Belarusian government forcing the landing of a Ryanair flight
from Athens to Greece on May 23.

James Hydzik: The Cabinet’s decision effectively isolates Belarusian aircraft from
Europe. Until now, Belavia aircraft had been flying their normal routes
transiting Ukraine. There is no public discussion of the cause of the delay by
the Ukrainian government, though Ukraine announced the cutting of direct air
ties between the two countries on May 24.
