Ukraine PM expects 50% increase in COVID-19 cases in September

Ukraine PM expects 50% increase in COVID-19 cases in September

2 September 2020

Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal stated in a televised
interview on Sept. 1 that he expects Ukraine to record 3,000 new COVID-19 cases
daily by the beginning of October, pravda.com.ua news site reported. The PM
added that this would load hospitals to about 80% of capacity. On Sept. 2, the
Health Ministry reported that new records had been broken with highs reached
both for new patients and deaths, at 2,495 and 51, respectively.

The ministry also announced on Sept. 2 that it was
streamlining the quarantine procedure and making it faster and simpler to end a
self-quarantine. Chief Sanitary Doctor Viktor Lyashko stated at his daily news
conference that only one coronavirus-negative test and no symptoms after 14
days of self-quarantine would be enough to be declared cured.

James Hydzik: PM Shmyhal did not hazard a guess as to how long the pandemic would
climb before the numbers began declining, nor what measures would be taken. The
changes to the quarantine procedure should be published this week.
