The Canadian
government is working to place Ukraine on a list of countries to which it will
permit certain weapons exports, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said after
meeting with Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko in Toronto on Sept. 22, as
reported by theglobeandmail.com news site. His government has begun to move
forward with a lengthy process to add Ukraine to the Automatic Firearms Country
Control List, Trudeau said, which would allow exporters of certain prohibited
firearms, such as automatic weapons, to submit permit applications to the
government for the export of the weapons to Ukraine. In his turn, Poroshenko
thanked the Canadian government for sending police and military personnel to
train local officers and soldiers.
Zenon Zawada: Canada is a sovereign country, but
its government works very closely with the U.S. And we can’t help but think
that such a sensitive announcement by Trudeau was discussed with American
officials, at minimum. So the Western establishment is creeping closer towards
providing armaments to Ukraine, but it has yet to cross the line of actually
doing it. Even with this announcement from Trudeau, we don’t expect Western
governments to cross that line because of the high risk involved.
