Constitutional Court recognizes Ukrainian language law as constitutional

The Constitutional Court of Ukraine decided on July 14
that the law “On Ensuring the Functioning of the Ukrainian Language as the
State Language” is constitutional. The decision was communicated to
pravda.com.ua, though the court representative stated that the full text of the
decision would be published on July 15.

The ruling comes a year after a petition to review the
law was sent to the court by pro-Russian MP Vadym Novynsky and 50 of his
associates, pravda.com.ua notes.

James Hydzik: The CC’s upholding of the law was welcomed by the government, and it
probably did not hurt President Zelensky’s ratings. The opposite ruling would
have empowered Novynsky and opposition parties and stripped the president of
popularity among the Russian-language favoring voters in his target base in the
south and east of the country, so this is probably the less damaging result for
Zelensky.
