Cases of the COVID-19 disease caused by the
coronavirus set the latest daily record of 1,453 on Aug. 6, Health Minister Maksym
Stepanov said in his daily press briefing. That’s compared to 1,318 cases on
Aug. 5 and 1,271 cases on Aug. 4. Thirty-three people died, 280 were
hospitalized, while 531 were reported to have recovered on Aug. 6. The most new
cases were in Kyiv (186), the Odesa region (156) and the Lviv region (152). The
most active illnesses are in the Lviv region (7,456), city of Kyiv (5,873) and
the Ivano-Frankivsk region (3,288).
“The numbers are surprising every day. We set new records
practically every day. Let’s think already about our attitude towards
quarantine rules! Communicating with doctors, we have very many complicated
incidents. The course of the disease has begun to change. This disease is very
difficult to bear. The number of lethal cases is rising. Hospitalizations are
rising,” Stepanov told his press briefing.
Zenon Zawada: These are serious numbers but the government hasn’t announced any new
quarantines for political reasons. It’s not clear yet whether the rising
hospitalizations – which set a daily record of 293 on Aug. 4 – are being
handled by the system, but it must be very strained at this point, if these
numbers are accurate. If the system is overburdened, that fact is being played
down.
