COVID cases set new record; parliament adjourns

COVID cases set new record; parliament adjourns

27 January 2022

Ukraine logged a record 32,393 cases of COVID-19 on
Jan, 26, the Health Ministry announced. There were 154 COVID-related deaths
recorded on the same day. The previous record for new cases, 27,377, was set on
Nov. 4, 2021.

The Verkhovna Rada faction leaders agreed to adjust
its schedule due to the sudden wave. The legislature will vote on changing to a
remote format and committee-only schedule. The opening of the new parliamentary
session will be pushed back to Feb. 14.

A wave of COVID has hit the Verkhovna Rada, with at
least 11 MPs currently ill with the disease, pravda.com.ua reported on Jan. 26.

James Hydzik: The sudden spike is not surprising, though the size is. There is also
little indication that the current record will hold for long. Hospitalizations
are currently holding steady, and that also can be expected to change for the
worse. Quarantine measures are bound to change, and soon.
