Agreements mark start of Zelensky’s working visit to the U.S.

1 September 2021

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky began his
working visit to the United States with Cabinet-level meetings and overseeing the
signing of agreements with governmental and commercial entities. These
agreements included nuclear power, as we report today.

Zelensky also met NASA Administrator Bill Nelson and a
Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the State Space Agency of
Ukraine and the US Department of Defense Space Command, president.gov.ua
announced.

Furthermore, a Strategic Defense Framework was signed
between the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine and the United States Department of
Defense. The presidential announcement states that along with bilateral defense
cooperation, the document further “facilitates” Ukraine’s entry into NATO.

James Hydzik: The defense
and energy agreements are no surprise, but Ukraine’s space sector is still a
comparatively hidden gem. Ukrainian developments in rocket technology are still
cutting edge technology, and Ukrainian specialists have been working with NASA
especially in the realm of small satellite launch. Private endeavors with
Ukrainian roots (and in particular, engines) will reach a new level with the
upcoming launch of Firefly Aerospace’s Firefly Alpha in September.

While these developments are all positive for Ukraine,
the meeting will invariably be defined by the meeting of the presidents at the
White House on Sept. 1.
