Borrell in Ukraine for two-day visit to front and Kyiv

5 January 2022

EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and
Security Josep Borrell arrived in Ukraine late on Jan. 4 to begin a visit to
the country. Borrell will be on the line of contact in Donbas and in Kyiv, then
leave on Jan. 6, he tweeted. Borrell will focus on the situation regarding
further Russian aggression against Ukraine. His message focuses on the need for
collective agreement and coordination of positions against the aggression. “The
EU cannot be a neutral spectator in these negotiations if Russia really wants
to discuss Europe’s security architecture,” Borrell said.

James Hydzik: The tendency of Ukraine and its allies to emphasize “nothing about us
without us” is probably another unintended result of Russia’s attempt to regain
control over eastern Europe. The pair of ultimatums sent to the U.S. and NATO
on Dec. 17, which insisted on NATO essentially coming to heel under Russian –
American negotiations, sparked the emphasis on coordinated positions and
action. Just as Putin has united Ukrainians, he may now be uniting Europe.
