Council of Judges elects quota for Ethics Council

Council of Judges elects quota for Ethics Council

26 October 2021

The Council of Judges of Ukraine elected on Oct. 23
four judges to sit on the Ethics Council, Interfax-Ukraine reported on the same
day. The judges elected were Supreme Court judge Lev Kyshakevych, Kyiv Court of
Appeal  judge Yuriy Triasun, Eastern Economic Court of Appeal judge
(retired) Volodymyr Syveryn, and Supreme Court judge Tetiana Chumachenko.

The vote comes after a Sept. 13 refusal by the Council
of Judges to vote on representatives. The move had drawn the ire of President
Zelensky as well as civil society and Ukraine’s western partners as an
impediment to judicial reform.

James Hydzik: The vote is a significant step toward creating a sitting ethics
watchdog. The ultimate question, though, is whether the Ethics Council will be
able to carry any weight without a struggle for survival first.
