EU foreign ministers postpone Russian sanctions decision

EU foreign ministers postpone Russian sanctions decision

23 July 2014

The EU Foreign Ministers Council decided at its July 22 meeting in Brussels to postpone until July 24 a decision to target more Russian citizens for sanctions, the CNBC television network reported. Currently, 72 individuals face visa bans and bank account freezes. The Council said it will decide by the end of July its first list of enterprises and organizations targeted for sanctions for their support of the pro-Russian separatists. Two Crimean enterprises have been targeted so far.

The EU Foreign Ministers Council approved in its concluding remarks to its meeting the possibility of officially recognizing the Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics as terrorist organizations. Lithuanian Foreign Minister Linas Linkevicius spoke in favor of the decision, also calling for an embargo on arms supplied to the Russian Federation. His position was supported by the governments of Great Britain and Sweden.

The Council also endorsed the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe and the trilateral contact group in their efforts to create the conditions for a ceasefire and called for OSCE monitoring of the Russian-Ukrainian border and the release of hostages.

Zenon Zawada: The EU is moving slowly on sanctions, which is not surprising. They’re in the pipeline, but we see Western sanctions as a deterrent rather than a solution. And unfortunately, we don’t see a peaceful solution to the Donbas conflict in sight.
