Gas Transit Through Ukraine Decreased By 5.9%

11 January 2008

In 2006 gas transit through Ukraine decreased by 5.9% yoy, from 136.4 bcm in 2005, to 128.4 bcm in 2006. Transportation of gas to Europe and Turkey decreased by 6.4%, while 1.3% less gas was transported to CIS countries (Moldova and Russia). Vladimir Nesterenko: Lower transit volumes are mainly due to extremely warm December in 2006. If late winter and/or spring happen to be cold, compensating for the warm winter, there is enough gas in Ukrainian storage facilities leftover from 2006 to cover possible hikes in gas consumption by European countries.
