Kyiv loses 3 MP seats for October elections

Kyiv loses 3 MP seats for October elections

6 April 2012

Ukraine’s Constitutional Court has ruled that for the purposes of the parliamentary election in October Ukrainian citizens living outside the country will not be registered as voters within the city of Kyiv. Registered out-of-country voters (roughly 400 ths) will now only be allowed to vote according to party lists (225 of 450 seats in the house will be allocated according to the lists), not in an individual electoral riding, which has many legal experts calling the move unconstitutional. The ruling removes three of the current 16 seats from the traditionally opposition-friendly capital city. According to the Ukrainska Pravda website, the three seats will be reallocated to the Crimea, Poltava, and Cherkasy regions, which are likely to be more accommodating to ruling political parties.
