Net FDI Up 67% yoy in 2007

19 February 2008

According to the State Statistics Committee, net foreign direct investment in Ukraine came to USD 7.88 bln (+67% yoy) in 2007. FDI inflow totaled USD 8.71 bln, while outflow reached USD 1.18 bln. The most substantial FDI inflows went into mineral production (USD 370.6 mln), FMCG (USD 292.0 mln), iron & steel (USD 245.1 mln) and chemicals (USD 181.9 mln). FDI stock (calculated since 1991) reached USD 29.49 bln. Polina Khomenko: We expect net FDI stated in the National Bank’s 2007 balance of payments to be higher than those of the State Statistics Committee, as the two authorities’ calculation methods and data sources differ; for instance, in 2006 the SSC reported net FDI of USD 4.72 bln, while the NBU posted net FDI of USD 5.74 bln. We await the release of the NBU’s data in the end of March, which we believe to be more reliable and stick to our net FDI forecast of USD 9 bln in 2007.
