New COVID-19 cases near record in Ukraine

The Ministry of Health of Ukraine announced that on
Aug. 11 there were 1433 new cases of coronavirus detected across the country.
This is slightly below the two record figures of 1453 and 1489 cases recorded
on Aug. 7 and 8, respectively. On Aug. 11, there were 19 COVID-19 related
deaths registered in Ukraine, and 752 patients were declared as recovered.

Health Minister Maxim Stepanov specified that among
yesterday’s newly-stricken were 116 children, and that 103 children had been
diagnosed on Aug. 7, pravda.com.ua news site reported. In total, 5993 children
have been diagnosed with COVID-19 since the beginning of the pandemic.

James Hydzik: With school still set to begin on Sep. 1 in Ukraine, the question of
how to handle the school year is coming into focus. Last year, the Ministry of
Education broadened the scope for out-of-school learning, so, legally, it
should become easier for parents who need to, to keep their children at home.
However, as with many aspects of Ukraine’s reforms, the regulations are largely
untested and still rely upon administrators, teachers, and parents to change
their mindsets. Add in the greater role grandparents play in child-reading in
Ukraine (such as in taking kids to school), and the headaches of
already-frazzled parents already trying to balance work and family are only
bound to increase.
