19 September 2011

U.S. President Barack Obama invited Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych to meet during the second nuclear security summit in Seoul in March 2012, the latter’s website reported on Friday. During the first summit in April 2010, in a joint declaration, Ukraine pledged to dispose of all its highly enriched uranium by the next summit. In a letter to his counterpart, Obama praised Ukraine’s progress on its commitment. The U.S. had said it would help Ukraine develop nuclear research capabilities, diversify nuclear power industry’s fuel supply and work together on other nuclear safety issues, such as safeguarding the Chornobyl nuclear site.
