Orange Parties Sign Coalition Agreement

Orange Parties Sign Coalition Agreement

16 October 2008

Following the official announcement of the election results, the Yulia Tymoshenko Bloc and Our Ukraine announced that they had signed a coalition agreement to form a new government.  Now that the election results are official Central Elections Commission has five days to publish the official election results in a state newspaper, after which the Rada has 30 days to open its first session. Nick Piazza: We view the signing of a coalition agreement a sign that the orange parties are going to attempt to seat a new government as soon as possible. In an effort to get the Party of Regions to accept the opposition role, both orange parties are trying to put together legislation concerning the opposition that would give Regions the right to have a role in most of the government’s activities included a deputy PM spot and seat on the board of the Cabinet’s finance committee which oversees funding for government projects. Tymoshenko and Our Ukraine are keen to appease Regions to avoid the possibility that the latter would cause further political instability by refusing to accept their seats in the new Rada.
