Petro Poroshenko, Head of Ukraine’s National Security and Defence Council, met with Iranian President-elect Mahmud Ahmadinejad in Tehran on Wednesday to discuss improving the two countries relations in the oil and gas sector. Poroshenko told the President-elect that Ukraine wants to work more closely with Iran, and said that Ukriane’s gas pipelines would be an ideal way to transport Iranian gas to the European market. Ahmadinejad said that Iran is ready to expand ties with Ukraine in the fields of oil, gas and aerospace. Concorde Capital: Ukraine continues to look for new ways to diversify its gas supplies away from Russian dependence, and a deal with Iran would be mutually beneficial for both countries. Iran which has the world’s second largest reserves of natural gas wants to become a bigger player on the European market and Ukraine would gain a new source of gas and profit from shipping Iranian gas to Europe.
