Retail trade grows 18% yoy in 2008

20 January 2009

Ukraine’s retail trade turnover in 2008 reached UAH 243.9 bln (USD 31.7 bln), a 17.9% yoy rise in real terms. In 2007, the volume of retail trade increased 28.8% yoy to UAH 318.7 bln (USD 41.4 bln). Andrii Parkhomenko: We expect that in 2009 retail trade will fall in real terms due to the decrease in real disposable income. Moreover, retail will suffer from consumers’ restrained access to credit, particularly in areas like automobiles (~50-60% bought on credit) and household appliances (~20-40%).
