The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) announced on Sept. 8 it arrested a group of four suspects in the Zaporizhia region who were allegedly recruited to organize terrorist acts and gather information on the region’s territorial defense and Ukrainian military formations. Their leader was a regional police officer. Searches revealed an explosive, ammunition for automatic weapons, narcotics, separatist literature and means of communications with terrorists of the Donetsk People’s Republic.
Zenon Zawada: Such an arrest is evidence that the Russian government is still active in destabilizing Ukraine despite the ceasefire achieved after the Aug. 31 vote in parliament establishing a specific order in the occupied territories of Donbas. It’s also evident that they haven’t given up on swaying the residents of neighboring regions, such as Zaporizhia, to their cause. So this is solid evidence that the Donbas specific order won’t necessarily lead to peace, although the leaders of the West and Ukraine see it as the best chance. Indeed considering what a disaster the Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics have been, it’s hard to conceive any similar effort replicated in neighboring Zaporizhia and Kharkiv with local support.
