Svoboda rally draws more than 10,000

Svoboda rally draws more than 10,000

15 October 2012

A rally in honor of the controversial Ukrainian Insurgent Army on Sunday organized by the nationalist party Svoboda drew 10,000 to central Kyiv, according to media reports. The Ukrainian Insurgent Army fought against both the Soviet Army and German Army during World War II.

Brad Wells: The reported crowd makes the rally one of the largest in Ukraine in the last two years. It is hard to imagine other opposition parties being able to muster such crowds for events at this pointin the campaign. Svoboda’s rise in popularity could be the surprise of the parliamentary election later this month. A September poll from the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology released last week put its support at 7.8%, above the 5.0% threshold for entering parliament for the first time.
