Three New Ministers Expected As Politics Polarizes

14 November 2008

The government yesterday formally proposed to parliament to dismiss the two remaining ministers from Our Ukraine who were appointed based on the party’s former plan to join the governing coalition. Coalition MPs said the two ministries – health, and youth, family and sport – and the vacant emergencies ministry would be divided among the three coalition parties and filled today. The move came after Our Ukraine confirmed its opposition status at a weekend party congress, rejecting President Yushchenko’s appeals to restart coalition talks. Meanwhile Yushchenko sharply criticized Prime Minister Yanukovich for calling in a weekend speech for the resignation of the foreign minister, one of two ministers nominated by the president. Tom Warner: Today could finally complete the long, drawn-out Cabinet changes triggered last month by Our Ukraine’s move into opposition. Yushchenko unsurprisingly has ended up more marginalized, with only the two ministers allocated to him by the constitution and a weak interior minister, and little genuine support from his party. The coalition might vote later this week to sack his foreign minister, Borys Tarasyuk, which would be a symbolic move, as Tarasyuk would stay on as acting minister. We are more concerned by rumors that the interior minister could be replaced by a Yanukovich ally in the weeks ahead. Despite this polarizing trend we are hopeful most of the coalition and opposition will vote together today and Thursday in scheduled votes on bills needed to join the WTO.
