Ukraine 2015 budget assumes 12.9 UAH/USD exchange rate

Ukraine 2015 budget assumes 12.9 UAH/USD exchange rate

18 September 2014

The Ukrainian government drafted its 2015 budget assuming a UAH 12.9/USD exchange rate, Finance Minister Oleksandr Shlapak stated on Sept. 17. This week, the hryvnia exchange rate has floated above UAH 14/USD on the ForEx market.

Alexander Paraschiy: The hryvnia’s future is very unclear at this point. On the one hand, everyone understands that current devaluation wave stems from the warfare and will ease as soon as the situation stabilizes.  On the other hand, it’s not clear when the warfare will end. In light of this, the assumed UAH 12.9/USD target does not look like something utterly unrealistic given that appreciation potential exists under normalized economic activity. At the same time, if no peace is reached, most likely the authorities will have to adjust the budget for a weaker hryvnia in 2015.
