Ukrainian farmers harvested 3.5 mmt of grains as of
July 2, or a 66.7% yoy surge, from an area of 2.0 mln ha, or 12% of total land
sown, the Agrarian Ministry reported the same day. Winter wheat was harvested
from 0.58 mln ha with an average yield of 2.97 t/ha, a 5.4% drop yoy. Winter
barley was harvested from 0.51 mln ha with an average yield of 3.19 t/ha, a
1.2% drop yoy. That means farmers harvested 1.7 mmt of winter wheat, a 2.8x yoy
surge, and 1.6 mmt of winter barley, a 23% yoy rise. Also, farmers harvested
328 kt of winter rapeseed, a 4.2x yoy surge, from 0.17 mln ha with an average
yield of 1.91 t/ha (5.4% lower yoy).
Andriy Perederey: The 2018
harvesting campaign is faster than last year (12% of total sown area was
harvested versus 7% the same date a year ago) owing to favorable weather
conditions. Warm temperatures exceeded average temperatures and accelerated
crop growth, according to the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Center.
Winter crops aren’t the key indicator of what to
expect this year as the main results of the Ukrainian harvesting campaign
depend on spring crops. Nevertheless, the current weather conditions allows us
to expect that this season’s harvest will be better yoy, which will contribute
positively to 2018 economic growth and the trade balance.
