Ukraine’s Health Ministry has compiled a list of
countries with high rates of COVID-19/coronavirus infection whose residents
will have to self-quarantine after entering Ukraine, the State Border Service
reported on June 15. A high infection rate – or more than 40 cases per 100,000
– includes such countries as the U.S., Great Britain, Russia, Belarus, and
Spain, the statement said. Those arriving from these countries must be in
self-quarantine for 14 days after arrival and possess medical insurance in the
event of becoming infected with the coronavirus. Ukraine has an infection rate
of 37 per 100,000 at the moment.
Olena Zelenska, the wife of the president, has been
hospitalized with double pneumonia as a result of being infected with the
COVID-19 disease caused by the coronavirus, the President’s Office reported on
June 16. She is in stable condition. The president tested negative for COVID-19
on June 15.
An estimated 666 infections of the COVID-19 disease
caused by the coronavirus were reported on June 15, Health Minister Maksym
Stepanov said in his daily briefing this morning. Eleven deaths were recorded
the same day, as well as 275 cases of recovery. Of the infections, 63 were
medical workers, or 9.5%. In all, 32,476 people have been infected with
COVID-19 in Ukraine during the pandemic (including 5,600 medical workers), of
which 912 died and 14,528 recovered.
Zenon Zawada: While the infection rate remains alarming in recent days (above the
300-500 cases at the virus’s first peak in early May), the death rate is
remarkably low for the same period. We don’t expect any drastic measures from
state officials, who are fearful of a negative public reaction to a reimposed
quarantine/lockdown. That’s especially with local elections set for October. We
believe they are hoping the infection rate will return to below 500 cases daily
by the end of the week.
