Ukrainian women between ages 18 and 60, who work in a
variety of fields, are now required to register with the military. The move
comes as Ukraine responds to the growing Russian threat on its borders. While
women already serve in Ukraine’s armed forces, with some in front-line positions,
the preparations for a general call would mostly bring women into the army for
staff and reserve positions. At this time, Ukraine has not called up its
operational reserves, which, according to military.com, includes 430,000 combat
veterans from the ongoing Donbas war.
James Hydzik: Ukrainians have already shown their willingness to engage in
resistance at the non-governmental level, as we reported last week. Now, with steps being taken to bring women into
the armed forces en masse, the official response can also be expected to grow
further.
