Ukraine prosecutor general’s son promoted to head key department

Ukraine prosecutor general’s son promoted to head key department

30 September 2014

Valeriy Yarema, the son of Prosecutor General of Ukraine Vitaliy Yarema, has been appointed the head of a key department in the State Registration Service, its web site reported on Sept. 30. He will lead its real estate department.

Zenon Zawada: It’s rare that 26-year-olds get to head an influential department in the national government. So it’s quite likely Yarema’s promotion (from deputy head) is linked to his father’s status. It’s a signal that those politicians who rode the wave of the Euromaidan protest are resisting activist attempts to fight nepotism and cronyism, which doesn’t bode well for the prospects of the “tectonic” reforms that President Petro Poroshenko said are necessary.
