Ukraine steel production decreases 2% yoy in 5M13

Ukraine steel production decreases 2% yoy in 5M13

5 June 2013

Ukraine produced 2.757 mmt of steel in May (flat mom) and 2.442 mmt of rolled steel products (down 2% mom), the steel industry association Metallurgprom announced on June 4. In 5M13, steel output fell 2% yoy to 13.8 mmt and rolled products output decreased 1% yoy to 12.3 mmt.

Roman Topolyuk: Ukraine’s steel production in May came close to the industry association’s forecasts. The results have coincided with a further deterioration in steel market prices. Steel billet prices declined 2% to USD 497 per ton during May, and hot rolled coil prices decreased 4% to USD 505 per ton. With such production and market dynamics, as well as a seasonal summer slowdown, export revenue from steel products is likely to be closer to USD 1 bln per month in the coming months compared to the monthly average of USD 1.4 bln in 2011-2012.
