Ukraine Supreme Court to hear censorship case

Ukraine Supreme Court to hear censorship case

5 February 2021

The Supreme Court of Ukraine announced that cases had
been filed against President Volodymyr Zelensky regarding his decrees ordering
the closure of three Ukrainian media outlets. These cases focused only on the
closure of 112.ua, NewsOne and Zik. The other activities in the president’s sanctions against Taras Kozak
have not yet been challenged.

James Hydzik: The cases
in the Supreme Court will be under a microscope for weeks to come. The major
questions, though, will be both political as well as legal. As we noted
previously, former president Poroshenko stated in an interview that he did not
sanction Kozak because the president simply cannot do this. The legal grounds
might be tenuous.

Foreign support for the sanctions will not weigh heavily – though the lack of it would have weakened
Zelensky’s position. The ties between judges and oligarchs will be vital,
though.
