Ukrainian politics complicating work towards Association pact, Fule says

8 February 2013

The EU is doing its necessary work towards ensuring the Ukraine-EU Association Agreement, but the political situation in Ukraine is complicating the process, European Commissioner for Enlargement Stefan Fule told Ukrainian MPs in Kyiv on Feb. 7. “We’re absolutely serious in the context of our responsibilities on political association and economic integration,” he said. Fule repeated his warnings about the Customs Union, stating, “It’s understood that Ukraine joining ant structure that requires a transfer of the ability to establish tariffs and a transfer of trade policy to supranational organs will mean that Ukrainian is no longer able to fulfill the EU Free Trade Agreement.” He repeated that the Eastern Partnership summit in Vilnius in November is the deadline for signing the Association Agreement.
