Voest-Alpine Considers Constructing Metal Plant in Ukraine

27 February 2008

The Vice Minister of Industrial Policy, Sergey Grishchenko said that an Austrian Voest-Alpine submitted a request to build a full cycle metal plant in Ukraine. The proposed plant will have a capacity of 5.4 mln mt of steel per annum; its construction cost was put at USD 5 bln. Voest-Alpine, in its request, asked the government to allot a 10 sq. km. land plot next to the Odesa Portside Plant. Eugene Cherviachenko: If the plant is constructed, we will see an increase in competition in the domestic metals & mining industry. However, Voest-Alpine is exposed to the substantial risk of a shortage in raw materials in Ukraine, which could result in the project’s cancellation.
