TheRegions party said its leader Viktor Yanukovich was seeking a meeting with President Yushchenko, who has been silent since the weekend. Regions leaders say they could form a government this week if Yushchenko quickly forwards Yanukovich’s nomination as prime minister to parliament. Leaders of Yanukovich’s coalition said last night that Petro Poroshenko and his ally Mykola Martynenko of Our Ukraine had preliminarily agreed to cooperate with the coalition in return for important committee posts. Tom Warner: Yushchenko and some of Our Ukraine’s leaders appear to be seeking a formal cooperation agreement in which Our Ukraine would not join the coalition but would take part in developing legislation. However, many Our Ukraine MPs are opposed to the idea and the faction could split if the proposal is brought to a vote. We expect Yushchenko to delay his decision on Yanukovich’s nomination as talks continue.
