A Kyiv district court arrested on Aug. 1 Oleksandr Yefremov, the former parliamentary faction head of the Party of Regions, for two months in relation to criminal cases filed for violating the territorial integrity of Ukraine and supporting the Luhansk People’s Republic terrorist organization. Since the EuroMaidan, Yefremov has had lesser criminal charges filed against him, for which he was arrested but not convicted. The court ruling demonstrates Ukraine becoming healthy again, wrote on his Facebook page Yuriy Lutsenko, the prosecutor general of Ukraine.
Zenon Zawada: Lutsenko is getting a bit too excited, a bit too early. Since the EuroMaidan, Ukraine’s law enforcement authorities have been compared to hobby fishermen, detaining suspects and holding them up for the cameras, before letting them go. Yefremov’s arrest will prove successful should he offer incriminating testimony against Putin’s government or if he’s convicted and sentenced to prison.
