Yekhanurov Is In.

22 September 2008

On his second attempt Yurii Yekhanurov was voted in as Prime Minister, by the Verkhovna Rada. He received 289 votes, 63 more than were required. Concorde Capital: The results are a huge boost for Yushchenko?s team and Ukraine. It means the end of the two weeks of uncertainty and controversy that have been surrounding the government. Nearly all the party factions voted in favour of the President?s candidate, including every member of the Party of Regions, led by former presidential rival Viktor Yanukovich.  The only parties who voted against or abstained from voting were the Tymoshenko block (the majority abstained), the United Ukraine Party and the Communists (voted all voted against). It is not clear yet what compromises Yushchenko had to make to get his man in, but it appears the President has managed to unify the Rada behind his Cabinet.  Look for the new Cabinet to be focused on reforms. Yekhanurov has said he intends to improve ties with Russia and change up to two-thirds of the cabinet members. The revolution is over and it is time for European evolution.
