Yushchenko and Yanukovich Talk It Out.

Yushchenko and Yanukovich Talk It Out.

20 July 2008

President Yushchenko and his old rival Viktor Yanukovich are holding a face-to-face meeting today that could decide whether there will be a Yanukovich government or new elections. Yushchenko has just 5 more days to wait before he receives the right to dissolve parliament (by his staff’s count) and 13 days to decide whether he will forward Yanukovich’s nomination as prime minister to parliament. Small pro- and anti-Yanukovich crowds are still hanging around parliament and some of the latter have moved to the president’s building. Before the meeting, Yanukovich said he expected Our Ukraine to join his coalition and promised to consult with Yushchenko on all cabinet appointments, while Anna Herman, a Regions MP, warned that the coalition could attempt to make Yanukovich prime minister without Yushchenko’s approval. Yushchenko’s press service announced he would meet today with his national security chief, interior minister and head of the SBU. Tom Warner: Most of the signals point to Yushchenko and Yanukovich striking some kind of deal.
