Yushchenko-Nazarbayev Talks Not Made Public

1 June 2008

President Viktor Yushchenko summarized his talks with Kazakhstan President Nursultan Nazarbayev during his first official visit to Kazakhstan June 30-31. Viktor Yushchenko spoke in favor of Russia’s ? led Unified Economic Space and encouraged the cooperation with Kazakhstan in the oil and gas and space industry projects.  Concorde Capital: The important objective of the visit has been Ukraine’s desire to secure Kazakh oil supplies. Although Nursultan Nazarbayev said to the press that the supplies of oil and gas to Ukraine should be coordinated with Russia, the Ukrainian delegation sources say that the leaders of the two countries discussed alternative ways of Kazakh oil supply.  While Viktor Yushchenko publicly praised the Unified Economic Space, he emphasized that Ukraine was interested only in the free trade zone, not customs or monetary integration encouraged by Russia.
