EU trade preferences take effect for Ukraine on Oct. 1

EU trade preferences take effect for Ukraine on Oct. 1

2 October 2017

Autonomous EU trade preferences for Ukraine as part of
the Ukraine-EU Association Agreement took effect for three years on Oct. 1, as
a result of their publication in the official journal of the European Union on
the prior day. Ukraine will be able to export more agricultural products to the
EU without customs, in particular 2,500 tons of honey; 650,000 tons of corn and
flour; 350,000 tons of barley and flour; and 65,000 tons of wheat and flour.
New quotas are also introduced for barley (7,800 tons), oats (4,000 tons),
processed tomatoes (3,000 tons) and grape juice (500 tons).

Zenon Zawada: Certainly, any improved trade preferences will help the Ukrainian
economy but these gains are rather small in the big picture. And in most cases,
only a few companies stand to benefit. Still, this contributes to the overall
trend of Ukraine integrating economically with the West.
